Technical meeting summaries

Summary of the First EMRAS II Technical Meeting, IAEA headquarters, Vienna from 19 to 23 January 2009

The IAEA's EMRAS II Programme was launched at its First Technical Meeting (TM) which was held at the IAEA's headquarters in Vienna from 19 to 23 January 2009. EMRAS II continues some of the work of previous international programmes in the field of radioecological modelling.

The TM was attended by 110 participants from 38 Member States. Mr Gordon Linsley of the United Kingdom chaired the meeting.

Potential topics for the new EMRAS II Programme were presented to participants in a Programme Proposal. The ideas for the programme had been developed during 2008–2009 taking into account the work of the now completed first phase of EMRAS, including suggestions and views from a variety of sources. It is planned that EMRAS II will run for 3 years, from 2009 to 2011.

During the First TM a presentation outlining the possible establishment of an additional Working Group, namely, the Working Group for the Development and Testing of a Harmonized Approach for Assessing Human and Biota Impacts, was made.

After discussion of the suggested topics during the TM Plenary Sessions, and subsequently in smaller groups, it was decided that the work of EMRAS II should be gathered into 3 Themes, under which 9 Working Groups were established.

Detailed plans for each of the established Working Groups, Working Group Minutes, Participant Lists and presentations given during meetings can be found on the respective pages of each Working Group.

Summary of the Second EMRAS II Technical Meeting, IAEA headquarters, Vienna from 25 to 29 January 2010

The Second EMRAS II Technical Meeting (TM) was held at the IAEA's headquarters in Vienna from 25 to 29 January 2010. The TM was attended by 140 participants from 42 Member States and was chaired by Mr Didier Louvat from the IAEA. Many experts in environmental modelling participated, who had not previously been involved in international model testing programmes. The TM began with a Plenary Session, where the Leaders of the 9 Working Groups reported on the work and the progress made since the last TM held in January 2009.

The majority of the time during the TM was allocated to the work within the 9 separate Working Groups. An interim Plenary Session was dedicated to highlighting actual problems related to environmental modelling. One presentation dealt with the assessment of exposures to the public in the vicinity of NORM and legacy sites, the second was related to the radiological protection of the environment and provided an overview of the current status and the remaining topics to be resolved.

During the Closing Plenary Session, Working Group Leaders reported on the progress made during the week of the TM and their respective group’s working plans for the next year. The presentations given during this and recent EMRAS II Working Group Meetings, as well as the Working Group Meeting Minutes can be found on the respective pages of the Working Groups.

Summary of the Third EMRAS II Technical Meeting, IAEA headquarters, Vienna from 24 to 28 January 2011

The Third EMRAS II Technical Meeting (TM) was held at the IAEA’s headquarters in Vienna from 24 to 28 January 2011. The TM was attended by 136 participants from 40 Member States and was chaired by Mr Gordon Linsley of the United Kingdom. The TM began with a Plenary Session in which the Leaders of the nine Working Groups reported on the work and the progress made since the last TM held in January 2010.

The TM was mainly focused on the work of the nine Working Groups. However, a short mid-meeting Plenary Session was dedicated to some topical issues related to environmental modelling and assessment. The topics included current work on assessing the potential future radiological impact of the planned high level waste repository in Sweden, a discussion of whether or not more data is needed in relation to work on radiation effects on non-human biota and, the implications of the new Basic Safety Standards for the assessment of exposures to the public and the environment.

During the Closing Plenary Session, leaders of each Working Group reported on the progress made during the TM and on their respective group’s working plans for the next year, recognizing that this will be the final year of the EMRAS II Programme.

The presentations given during this and recent EMRAS II Working Group Meetings, as well as the Working Group Meeting Minutes can be found on the respective pages of the Working Groups.
