The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an autonomous intergovernmental organization based in Vienna, Austria.

Vienna International Center

It was founded in 1957 at the decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The IAEA is authorized to:

  • Encourage research and development into peaceful uses at atomic energy
  • Foster exchanges of scientific and technical information
  • Devise and apply a system of safeguards to ensure that nuclear materials intended for civil programs are not diverted for military purposes
  • Establishing or adopting standards for health and safety
