Implementing a strategy for sustainable education and training

Rationale - Education and training in radiation, transport and waste safety is one of the main mechanisms for assisting Member States in the application of the Agency radiation safety standards. General Conference resolutions have repeatedly emphasized the role of the Agency in this area. In 2001, the Secretariat prepared a strategic plan for education and training aiming at having sustainable education and training programmes, in radiation, transport and waste safety, in the Member States by 2010. A Steering Committee has been established to advise on policy development, the maintenance of the Agency’s training programme and the monitoring of the long term action plan. This project continues the emphasis being placed on sustainable education and training by implementing the Agency's strategy for this purpose. A high priority, within this project, is the assessment of training needs in Member States.

Objective

To enable Member States to build sufficient qualified and trained personnel necessary for an adequate and sustainable national radiation safety infrastructure through the establishment of national strategies for sustainable education.

Major Tasks for 2008-2009

Develop guidance for selfassessment on the effectiveness of a training programme, based on the EduTA method
Develop guidance documents on education and training in radiation, transport and waste safety
Develop information material to increase worker awareness of occupational radiation protection
Develop information material on occupational radiation protection for medical professionals
Develop and implement training packages for NORM industries
Organise practice specific training on occupational radiation protection
Translate and disseminate syllabus and training material for Radiation Protection Officers (RPO)
Develop training material as well as interactive training modules for elearning
Translate the training packages into other Agency official languages
Organize meeting of the Steering Committee on Education and Training
