Euratom Directive

Within the EU, the Council of Ministers is obliged to lay down Basic Safety Standards in Radiation Protection proposed by the European Commission. The most recent BSS have been adopted by the Council Directive 96/29/EURATOM of 13 May 1996 laying down basic safety standards for the protection of the workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionizing radiation. The European radiation protection legislation is binding on all Member States and is mirroring most parts of the ICRP 60 recommendations. The Member States are obliged to transpose this directive before 13 May 2000 into national legislation.
