Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Practices in Eastern European Countries, (Working material) - The document compiles working information concerning low and intermediate level waste in 17 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It describes the sources of radioactive waste, waste classification, waste management and mainly disposal practices in these countries, including description of existing and planned facilities. It also discusses existing legal framework and safety requirements and criteria relevant for waste disposal. Evaluation of safety of near surface disposal facilities is also covered and main areas for future work identified by the national experts who took part in the RER/9/057 Project "Upgrading Safety of Near Surface Disposal Facilities".

Reference Training Material on Safety Assessment of Near Surface Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities, (Working Material, CD-ROM) - One of the Agency projects in this area is RER/9/067 with the main objective to improve safety of near surface waste disposal facilities by using harmonized approaches for safety assessment and derivation of quantitative waste acceptance criteria. It aims at implementing these methodologies in order to promote the exchange of experience on approaches for building confidence in and presentation of safety assessment results and waste acceptance criteria for these repositories. It draws on best international practices and envisages maintaining synergy with the IAEA regular programme by implementing the knowledge and feedback from the project into the on-going IAEA activities. The reference training material on Safety Assessment of Near Surface Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities was developed and has been used in various IAEA training events (training courses and workshops) as well as part of this IAEA project.
