Advanced Tools for Safety Assessment

Sample measurement analysisDevelopment and Use of Advanced Tools for Safety Assessment

To strengthen Member States capabilities in effective safety assessment and safety enhancement of nuclear installations through the development and application of safety standards and guides for advanced deterministic and probabilistic analytical methods/tools, and through the integration of deterministic and probabilistic approaches and its applications to the risk informed decision-making process, and the implementation of safety performance indicators for safety assessment application and increased transparency .

Specific topical areas and their applications include: design basis accident, beyond design basis accident, safety analysis, accident management, safety performance indicators, risk informed decision-making, and deterministic and probabilistic safety assessment methods/tools.

Advanced safety analysis methods

Harmonizing the use of advanced safety analysis methods for long term operation of existing NPPs and for innovative designs

To harmonize the use by Member States of advanced safety analysis methods, such as best estimate methods, and computational fluid dynamics, in support of long term operations of existing nuclear power plants and for innovative designs in accordance with the Agency’s safety standards. To provide for self-assessment by nuclear power plant operators of defence in depth capabilities of existing and innovative reactor designs, in particular in the area of accident analysis . The IAEA Centre for Advance Safety Analysis Tool (CASAT) is currently being expanded to assure the availability of advanced safety assessment tools, support and associated training to the Member State.
