Techniques for Occupational Dose Reduction
Information Exchange on Techniques for Occupational Dose Reduction
Based on proposals made by an IAEA Conference in 1998 and a Peer Review in 1999, a Consultants meeting was held in IAEA in April 2001 to review the Existing Information Exchange on Methodologies and Techniques for Occupational Dose Reduction in Different Industries, excluding Nuclear Power Plants, and to plan for Future Activities. The participants represented the European ALARA Network and Argentina, Brazil, Albania, Croatia, Lithuania, Ghana, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Korea and Philippines. The meeting was unanimous in agreeing that regional ALARA Networks were feasible and would significantly enhance feedback and the exchange and dissemination of information on practical radiation protection issues. As such they would act as a catalyst and focus for improvements in radiation protection in general and in occupational radiation protection in particular.
In April 2002, the Central and Eastern European ALARA Network, CEEAN was established. The Findings and recommendations of the International Conference on Occupational Radiation Protection, held in Geneva in August 2002, give strong support for networking and the Action Plan for Occupational Radiation Protection includes actions on "Information exchange to promote greater awareness and understanding". A Workshop on Practical Implementation of the Principle of Optimization of Radiation Protection was held in Vienna 1-3 March 2004, supported by the Europe Section of the IAEA Technical Co-operation (TC) Department. It was followed by a project planning meeting which formulated a proposal for a Regional TC Project on Practical Implementation of the Principle of Optimization of Radiation Protection through Regional Networking. This TC project is expected to be launched in the Europe region in 2005.
