Regulatory Infrastructure and Transport Safety
Our Work
The Section is responsible for providing Member States with safety standards, guidance and tools to foster regulatory infrastructure for the control of radiation sources, for the safe transport of radioactive material, and for managing information for the identification of needs in Member States that would be used to improve radiation, transport and waste safety.
Responsibilities
The Section has the following responsibilities:
- Is responsible for the development and revision of transport safety standards, supporting TRANSSC
- Serves as the focal point for education and training and for technical assistance to Member States, including training, profiles and related action plans
- Serves as the NS focal point for managing all information available for the identification of needs in Member States which can be used to prioritize NSRW activities on radiation, waste and transport safety, and to approve on behalf of NS the provision of a radiation source for a Member State mainly through the Technical Co-operation Fund
- Serves as the focal point for IRRS and participates in advisory and appraisal missions to Member States
- Serves as the NS focal point for developing safety standards and other undertakings on the regulatory control of radiation sources and on the transport of radioactive material, and for their application in Member States
- Is responsible for the identification of needs to improve the regulatory control of radiation sources and the transport of radioactive material and for the interpretation of the profiles of Member States in these thematic areas
- Participates in and provides technical support for the organization of training courses in the technical and scientific areas under its responsibility
- Provides for the exchange of information among Member States in the technical and scientific areas under its responsibility through the organization of meetings, conferences, networking, and the sharing of insights gained from advisory and appraisal missions with the Member States
- Provides technical input and support in the areas of its technical and scientific competence both within and outside the Department, e.g. to the Incident and Emergency Centre for the response to radiological emergencies and nuclear incidents
- Serves as the IAEA’s representative at international committees on committees on transport regulations and on the regulatory control of sources and with manufacturers
Control of Radiation Sources Unit
- Is responsible for the standards for regulatory infrastructure and control of radiation sources, for the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources (the Code) and associated guidance
- Is responsible for NSRW’s organization of and participation in IRRS
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of project(s) and activities under the responsibility of the Section in the areas of regulatory infrastructure and the control of radiation sources
Transport Safety Unit
- Provides the Secretariat for TRANSSC
- Serves as the focal point for all issues connected with the transport of radioactive material
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of project(s) and activities under the responsibility of the Section in this technical and scientific area of competence
Technical Assistance & Information Management Unit
- Co-ordinates and harmonizes the Division’s education and training activities, technical assistance and advisory services (e.g. IRRS, peer reviews), including profiles and related action plans to Member States
- Serves as the focal point for managing all information available for the identification of needs in Member States which can be used to prioritize NSRW activities on radiation, waste and transport safety
- Serves as the focal point for NSRW management systems
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of project(s) and activities under the responsibility of the Section in this area of competence.
