Radiation Safety and Monitoring Services
Our Work
The Section is responsible for the delineation of a global radiation safety regime to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, according to the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation monitoring and protection services for staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionising radiation due to activities conducted by the IAEA.
Responsibilities
The Section has the following responsibilities:
- Is responsible for developing and maintaining radiation safety standardsin general radiation protection, supporting RASSC
- Is responsible for developing and maintaining safety standards and guidance for public exposure and emergency exposure situations
- Serves as the focal point for developing radiation safety standards and other undertakings on practices involving the use of radiation sources and on the application of radiation protection criteria for all types of exposures
- Is responsible for the identification of needs to improve radiation safety based on dose trends and on the interpretation of the profiles of Member States on the protection of patients, on exposures of the public due to natural sources of radiation and emergency situations, and on occupational exposure due to all types of situations
- Is responsible for developing training material, guidance material and tools for facilitating the implementation of the IAEA radiation safety standards in Member States on the technical areas under its responsibility
- Participates in and provides technical support for the organization of training courses
- Participates in advisory and appraisal missions to Member States, including IRRS missions on its technical areas of competence o Provides for the exchange of information among Member States according to its thematic areas through the organization of meetings, conferences, safety assessment intercomparison projects, networking and the sharing of insights gained from advisory and appraisal missions with other Member States
- Provides individual dosimetry and workplace monitoring services to the IAEA
- Provides technical input and support in the areas of its technical and scientific competence both within and outside the Department, e.g. to the Incident and Emergency Centre for the response to radiological emergencies and nuclear incidents
- Serves as the IAEA’s representative at international committees on radiation safety, and interfaces with other international organizations as appropriate to ensure a co-ordinated approach
Radiation Protection Unit
- Provides the Secretariat for RASSC
- Serves as the focal point for the development of general radiation protection documents for all types of exposure and situations, and for their integration and implementation
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of project(s) and activities under the responsibility of the Section in the area of general radiation protection
- Is responsible for the development of standards for the protection of the public in exposure situations arising from the use of material from NORM and from intervention in existing exposure situations resulting from emergencies
Radiation Protection of Patients Unit
- Serves as the focal point for all issues connected with the radiation protection of patients and volunteers in biomedical research, covering radiography, interventional procedures and therapeutic and diagnostic practices using ionising radiation and radiation-producing equipment
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of project(s) and activities under the responsibility of the Section in this technical and scientific area of competence
Radiation Protection of Workers and Monitoring Services Unit
- Serves as the focal point for all issues connected with occupational radiation protection for all types of situations (medical, industry, nuclear facilities, NORM)
- Provides individual dosimetry services and workplace monitoring for the IAEA
- Provides for the exchange of information among Member States through the organization of safety assessment intercomparison projects
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of project(s) and activities under the responsibility of the Section in this technical and scientific area of competence
