Since the 1990s, the IAEA has organized various meetings and provided review services related to safety aspects of ageing and long term operation.

This section provides information on relevant IAEA safety services, e.g. review missions and meetings, as well as national activities related safety aspects of ageing and long term operation.

IAEA Safety Review Services related to Safety Aspects of Ageing and LTO

This subsection provides information on past relevant IAEA review services.

The IAEA has provided review services (missions/meetings) on ageing management programmes of NPP components. Mission reports are available upon request through the Permanent Mission, or, if the mission report is restricted, please contact a responsible regulatory body of the host Member State.

Vilnius Lithuania Expert meeting to review the regulatory requirements on ageing management for Ignalina NPP The mission reviewed the regulatory requirements for AMP development, issuing recommendations on its improvement in view of an efficient and quick implementation by the plant management.
15-19 Nov 1999 KANUPP Pakistan AMAT mission to KANUPP
The mission reviewed the situation in the management of material/physical ageing at KANUPP; and provided advice on establishing a systematic AMP in line with the present day methodologies and tailored to achieving the objective of operating KANUPP safely for ten years beyond its design life. The mission report is restricted.

Review mission on regulatory requirement and ageing management programme implementation at the Armenian NPP The mission reviewed the regulatory requirements for ageing management, developed by ANRA, the implementation of the ageing management program (AMP) at ANPP and the workplan for ARM/9/012, consistent with the mission outcome .

Yerevan Armenia Review mission on ageing management programme at the Armenian NPP The mission carried out a review of both the organizational aspects relevant to the implementation of the AMP at the ANPP and the technical aspects concerning the migration of the databases available at the ANPP for ISI and maintenance management into a new system suitable for ageing evaluation and control.

AMAT mission to Borssele NPP
Based on the request of the Government of the Netherlands, an IAEA Ageing Management Assessment Team (AMAT) visited the Borssele Nuclear Power Plant (KCB) to review the situation in the management of material and physical ageing; and to provide advice on systematic ageing management programme (AMP) to support the objective of operating the plant safely for at least the next ten years.

Expert mission on plant life management in Ukraine
The mission reviewed the current status of “Lifetime Management and License Renewal” in Ukraine, provided recommendations on their license renewal activities, and made overall planning for TC project UKR/4/014.

Expert Mission to Ukraine to Review Standard Ageing Management Programme for Ukrainian NPPs, South Ukraine NPP The mission: 1) advised on the draft Standard Programme for Ageing Management of NPP Unit drafted by Energoatom, 2) present practice of NPP Ageing Management Programme (of experienced countries) and 3) advised on Ageing Management and other activities of Ukrainian utilities for preparation of License Renewal in Ukraine.

Yerevan Armenia Review mission on the Ageing Management Programme at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant The final review mission was carried out as an AMAT full scope mission. The mission represented the second follow-up of two preparatory missions carried out on October 2001 and December 2002. Main objective of the mission was the review of the implementation of the ageing management program (AMP) at the ANPP. The review was focused on the AM pilot project implemented at the ANPP on a selected subset of components.

Peer Review of the HEAE Regulatory Requirements for Long Term Operation of Paks Nuclear Power Plant The mission reviewed the HAEA guidelines issued in the license renewal Long Term Operation (LTO) regulatory framework, their completeness and compliance with the IAEA recommendations. The review was focused on both the “LTO-specific” and the “LTO precondition” programs.

National activities related to safety aspects of ageing and LTO

This subsection provides information on activities in Member States related to ageing and long term operation. Currently, information on the Russian Federation, the USA and UK is available.

Russian Federation

The state owned enterprise “Rosenergoatom” is conducting safety upgrade and life extension activities for its NPPs. The following two summary reports about life time extension of NPPs have been published.

United Kingdom

HSE web page “British Energy Reports” presents reports of NII's findings on the PSRs of the British NPPs.

United States of America

As of 1st March 2006, 19 licensing renewal applications have been completed and 8 applications are being reviewed. Supplemental Environmental Impact Statements and Safety Evaluation Reports of these applications are available on the US NRC web page.
