DDG-NS signed the Practical Arrangements for the cooperation between IAEA and the Autoridad Regulatoria Nuclear of Argentina (ARN)

IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, 18 September 2015

Objectives

The Practical Arrangements were signed by Mr Denis Flory, the Deputy Director General of the IAEA and by Mr Julián Gadano, the 1st vice-president, on behalf of Mr Diego Hurtado, the ARN President of the Board of Directors, on 18th September 2015 on the sidelines of the 59th General Conference of the IAEA in Vienna.

These Practical Arrangements establish the framework for non-exclusive cooperation between the IAEA and the ARN in the area of a development of guidance in management of radionuclide activity concentrations in food and non-food commodities.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Mr Miroslav Pinak, Head of the Radiation Monitoring and Safety Section said "Argentina and the Autoridad Regulatoria Nuclear (ARN) have a long history of cooperation in radiation protection issues at the national and international levels. We look forward to working closely with the ARN staff and using their experience for the benefit of all our Member States and to extending our cooperation further".

Background

The development and promotion of a harmonized approach for managing radionuclide activity concentrations in foodstuffs, which can be later used in the national regulatory framework, is one of the priority activities of these Practical Arrangements.

The IAEA and the ARN will subsequently cooperate on developing a similar approach for contaminated non-food commodities, taking into account the international trade issues that exist. They will share experiences and technical information in this field. Meetings strengthening the development of radiation protection criteria and approaches will be scheduled between the two parties.
