IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Glossary

IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Glossary

The IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Glossary, 2022 (Interim) Edition, defines and explains technical terms used in IAEA safety standards and IAEA nuclear security guidance and other safety and security related IAEA publications, and provides information on their usage.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Glossary includes terms and definitions that have been established in IAEA safety standards and nuclear security guidance issued and approved up to 2022. The primary purpose of the glossary is to promote consistency of terminology and usage in the safety standards and nuclear security guidance, in the work of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and in the IAEA as a whole.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Glossary provides guidance primarily for the drafters and reviewers of safety standards, nuclear security guidance and other publications, and is a source of information for users of these publications. Such users — in particular drafters of national legislation — should be aware, however, that the terms have been chosen, defined and explained for this purpose. Terminology and usage may differ in other contexts, such as in the publications of other organizations and in binding international legal instruments.

In addition, the 2022 Edition of the IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Glossary is available in English in electronic version.
