Overview
Publications in the safety Standard Series are numbered according to the five application areas described below:

Categories
The Safety Standards are further categorized as Safety Fundamentals, Safety Requirements and Safety Guides. These three categories are more fully described below:
Safety Fundamentals
A common Safety Fundamentals publication, numbered as Safety Standards Series No. SF-1, has been issued, superseding the three Safety Fundamentals publications issued as Safety Series numbers 110, 111-F and 120.
Safety Requirements
Each of the five application areas mentioned has at least one Safety Requirement publication and in three of the areas (General Safety, Nuclear Safety, and Radioactive Waste Safety) there is more than one. In each area the Safety Requirements publications is numbered sequentially at the time of publication. For example in the area of General Safety the first Safety Requirements to be published are those concerning legal and governmental infrastructure, which is published as GS-R-1. This is followed by the publication GS-R-2 on Preparedness and Response for a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency. The radiation and transport safety areas each have only one Safety Requirements publication. The current publication of the transport safety requirements is TS-R-1.
Safety Guides
The Safety Guides are numbered according to the related Safety Requirements, and then sequentially as they are published. For example, the Safety Guides that supplement the Safety Requirements WS-R-1, are designated WS-G-1.1, WS-G-1.2, WS-G-1.3, etc., and the Safety Guides which supplement the Safety Requirements WS-R-2, are designated as WS-G-2.1, WS-G-2.2, WS-G-2.3, and so on.
