The International Project on Demonstration of the Operational and Long-Term Safety of Geological Disposal Facilities for Radioactive Waste
In the field of radioactive waste management, and more specifically geological disposal of radioactive waste, the GEOSAF I and II projects on the demonstration of safety of geological disposal were conducted during the period 2008–2015:
GEOSAF I’s objective was to harmonize views and opinions on the construction of a safety case for a geological disposal facility (GDF), mainly focused on long term safety.
GEOSAF II has built further on GEOSAF I, and IAEA standards such as SSR-5, SSG-14 and SSG-23 were reviewed; it started in 2012 and tackled the integration of operational safety and post-closure safety within the framework of an integrated safety case.
Regarding the safety case, GEOSAF I and II have provided so far a collection of findings addressing what is expected from a safety case covering both the operational and post-closure period. GEOSAF III will aim therefore at illustrating, through practical examples and case studies, how the safety case is to be built by waste management organizations and evaluated by regulatory bodies and technical and scientific support organizations (TSOs).
From the concepts put forth by GEOSAF II and widely recognized as useful for the demonstration that a GDF is safe during the operational and post-closure phases, GEOSAF III will aim at developing practical guidance for the safety case based on the concept of Design Target, Safety Envelope and As Built State.
GEOSAF-III project kick-off meeting Vienna, 17-20 May 2016
A general discussion on the draft TOR for GEOSAF III was carried out in the plenary session. The way forward for GEOSAF III was discussed before the Chair adjourned the meeting.
The First Plenary Meeting of the International Project on Demonstration of the Operational and Long-Term Safety of Geological Disposal Facilities for Radioactive Waste (GEOSAF Part III), Vienna, 22-26 May 2017
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and update the draft terms of reference for GEOSAF Part III, to establish the project’s working groups, and to develop a work plan to illustrate, through practical examples and case studies, how the safety case is to be built by waste management organizations and evaluated by regulatory bodies and technical support organizations.
