International Conference on Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors, 19-22 June, 2006, Vienna, Austria
Background
IAEA activities relating to the management of spent fuel have a long history and continue to be of importance as the subject evolves. In particular, multinational approaches for the management of spent fuel and the recent initiatives of the USA and Russia in applying advanced technologies in the reprocessing of spent fuel and the recycling of materials are of interest to many Member States
With this broader picture in mind the International Atomic Energy Agency, in cooperation with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, held an International Conference on “Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors” from 19 to 22 June 2006 in Vienna. The conference was attended by 150 participants and observers from 36 countries and 4 international organizations. outcomes
Scope
The following main aspects were covered in the topical sessions and the poster presentation:
- The evolving international scene, including multinational approaches and emerging international fuel cycle initiatives that have significant potential to shape and influence future spent fuel management approaches in Member States
- The application of an international safety regime, including the Joint Convention and IAEA Safety Standards, in view of multinational approaches
- Ensuring criticality safety in the management of spent fuel, including burnup credit
- The extension of time frames for the storage of spent fuel and the safety and technology implications
- The properties and the behaviour of the components of a spent fuel store, i.e. the storage facility, the storage container, the fuel and its cladding in view of longer storage periods
Objectives
The objective of the conference was to discuss recent developments in the management of spent fuel, including policy, political, safety and technological aspects and advances. Particular emphasis was placed on matters related to spent fuel storage, e.g. time frames, criticality safety and the components of a spent fuel storage system.
