International Symposium on Restoration of Environments with Radioactive Residues
The symposium was organized by the IAEA and hosted by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC).
Objective
The objective of the Symposium is to foster information exchange on the restoration of environments with radioactive residues, including principles and criteria for guiding decision making and the methodologies for assessing the radiological situation and for remediating the sites, with the overall aim of promoting international consensus on the relevant issues in these areas.
Scope
The following topics were covered in the Symposium:
- National and international policies and criteria for the remediation of sites with radioactive residues
- Radiological assessment of sites with radioactive residues
- Remediation of sites with radioactive residues, strategies, remediation techniques and technologies, and safe waste management
- Decision making and involvement of interested parties in policy implementation
