Shanghai, China, 24 - 28 October 2011
First International Earthquake Preparedness and Response for Nuclear Power Plants Workshop
The International Seismic Safety Centre (ISSC) held the First International Earthquake Preparedness and Response for Nuclear Power Plants Workshop in Shanghai, China. Over 70 participants from 30 countries attended and were informed about post Fukushima actions in the different countries.
The common denominator was the assessment of seismic safety margins and other pre planning activities addressed in IAEA Safety Report Series No. 66 on Earthquake Preparedness and Response for Nuclear Power Plants. Japan presented their implementation of the concepts and the Japanese adaptation of SR-66. Japan recommended that all Member States adopt similar measures as this will be useful in recovering from an earthquake and save time in getting plants back on line.
China expressed their desire to hold more workshops in China on this issue as they have a large number of nuclear power plants, and additional workshops will allow more utilities to participate.
All participants considered this Workshop and Safety Report 66 a useful tool to implement post Fukushima earthquake preparedness actions.
