Fourth IRSRR Meeting

Under IAEA programme on the Safety of Research Reactors, it is operated the Incident Reporting System for Research Reactors (IRSRR) that aimed to collect, analyse and disseminate information on unusual events that have occurred at research reactors. Until now, 47 Member States jointed the IRSRR.

The fourth Technical Meeting on the Incident Reporting System for Research Reactors (IRSRR) was conducted jointly by the IAEA and the Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) in Daejon, Republic of Korea, from 16 to 20 of May 2005. This technical meeting was implemented within the framework of the Agency’s Program J7.01 and with additional support from the Regional TC Project RER/9/058 and EBP Asia.

The objectives of the meeting were:

  • To exchange information on safety significant events that occurred at reasearch reactors
  • To provide insight from operational experience feedback
  • To provide training to the IRSRR coordinators, and
  • To identify the needs for the future development of the IRSRR.

Fifty-four participants from operating organisations as well as from regulatory bodies representing twenty-nine Member States (MS) attended the 4th IRSRR Technical Meeting.

As usual in these meetings in addition to the exchange of information and discussions on the occurrences a training session was held, which focused on three topics proposed by the coordinators during the previous meeting: root cause analysis, safety culture and event investigation techniques. For the duration of the table top exercise sessions, the participants were split into five groups, and each group was required to analyse different events reported by participants, using several event investigation techniques.

Fourth Technical Meeting of the IRSRR Co-ordinatorsAs part of the week activities a technical tour was organized to two research reactors the kW AGN-201 and to the 30 MW HANARO research reactor. The reactors operating staff presented the refurbishing plan for the AGN-201 and the safety management of HANARO research reactor.

On the last day of the meeting, the participants agreed to have the next IRSRR Technical Meeting in 2007.
