Services to the Agency's own operations

Rendering radiation protection and monitoring services to the Agency's own operations

Rationale - The health and safety measures of the Agency are established in Articles IX.I.3, XI.E.3, XI.F.2 and XII.A.2 and 6 of the Statute, and are applicable to activities involving exposure to radiation on its own premises or during operations under its control or supervision. Operational services for facility control and individual monitoring including exposure assessments have to be rendered to comply with the Agency’s Radiation Safety Regulations for its own operations as well as to the operations making use of materials, services, equipment, facilities, and information made available by the Agency. The Agency’s laboratories and the verification activities employ more than 500 staff members who are occupationally exposed to radiation in the performance of their work.

Moreover, persons for whose radiation protection the Agency is responsible, such as members of advisory and assistance missions and emergency response teams as well as technical cooperation experts, are also subject to the Agency’s occupational monitoring programme while on assignment. Bearing in mind the need for the RMPS to be used as a model for the MS, efforts have to be pursued regarding the maintenance of the competence of its staff members and of the technical adequacy of its installations.

Objective

To ensure compliance with the operational health and safety rules and regulations prescribed by the Agency on its premises and operations, and assess the occupational radiation exposure of Agency staff and other persons for whose occupational radiation protection the Agency is responsible.
