(Activity) IAEA Secretariat to establish a Safety Standards Review Task Force (SSRTF) to review the IAEA Safety Standards. Completed
The Secretariat established a Safety Standards Review Task Force (SSRTF), which developed a draft Safety Standards Action Plan specifically to review the relevant IAEA Safety Standards. The SSRTF undertook a systematic review of the IAEA Safety Standards taking into account the implications of the lessons learned to date from the Fukushima accident. The review focused, as a priority, on the set of Requirements applicable to Nuclear Power Plants and to the Storage of Spent Fuel. This includes all the General Safety Requirements and the Specific Safety Requirements that relate to site evaluation for nuclear installations, and design, commissioning and operation of nuclear power plants. Completed
(Activity) IAEA Secretariat to prepare proposals for reviewing the IAEA Safety Standards based on the output from the SSRTF reviews. Completed
In March 2012, the Commission on Safety Standards (CSS) considered the Secretariat s progress report on the review of the IAEA safety standards in the light of the lessons learned to date from the Fukushima accident. The report identified areas where the safety requirements could be further strengthened. For those areas, the CSS agreed to the preparation of a document outlining the process for amending the corresponding safety requirements. Completed
The CSS also supported the proposal from the Secretariat to incorporate these improvements as addenda and to prepare only one document including all these improvements in order to improve the efficiency of the review and approval process. A CSS progress report is expected to be provided to the Director General by end of May 2012. Completed
