The IAEA have signed a PA with the Fukushima Prefecture on Radiation Monitoring and Remediation. The PA is designed to complement existing Japanese activities and to provide immediate assistance and support which will be of direct benefit to those living in Fukushima Prefecture. These activities will include development of environmental radiation monitoring and mapping technology by unmanned aerial vehicles, analyses of results of environmental monitoring and exposure pathways to reduce or avoid exposure and the management of radioactive waste. The Secretariat, along with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD NEA), supported the Government of Japan and TEPCO in organizing a workshop and an international symposium in March 2012 on decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP. The primary objective of both the international experts workshop and the subsequent symposium was to foster the dialogue and the information exchange on current and future challenges in implementing TEPCO s roadmap with the participation of international experts, to identify challenges and technical needs for the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPP, units 1-4 and to explore possible areas for international cooperation to address these challenges. The Secretariat organized and conducted an international training course on Harmonization of National Dose Registry in Member States in April 2014 attended by 12 participants from nine Member States. The objective of the course was to harmonize the national dose registry in different Member States and transfer experience on developing and upgrading a national dose registry to the embarking countries including its use during an emergency situation. The participants were provided with a prototype of a National Dose Registry aligned with the IAEA safety standards and the requirements and practices for reporting. Completed
An international training course on Occupational Radiation Protection Appraisal Services (ORPAS) is under preparation. The purpose of the course is to train the core experts for the future ORPAS mission in the Member States. 10 experts from different regions will attend the course. In progress

The project is expected to be completed by 2015, but interim results will be disseminated accordingly. In progress

The Secretariat actively participated in the first Research Coordination Meeting of the Coordinated Research Project entitled "Strengthening of Biological Dosimetry in IAEA Member States: Improvement of Current Techniques and Intensification of Collaboration and Networking among the Different Institutes". One of the aims of this meeting was to investigate the possibility of establishing a network of biological dosimetry laboratories which could respond to cases of high personnel radiation exposures incurred during an accident or an emergency.
